UTI Abbreviations for urinary tract infection A urinary tract infection is an infection that can happen anywhere with the urinary tract. UTIs can have different names depending on the part of the urinary tract is infected. cystitis- bladder infection Pyelonephritis-kidney infection Urethritis-an infection of the tube that empties urine from the bladder to the outside
Symptoms of UTI Cloudy or bloody urine which can sometimes have a strong foul odor Low fever may vary from person to person Pain or burning with urination Pressure or cramping in the lower abdomen A strong need to urinate often even when the bladder has such been emptied.  If infection has spread to the kidneys these or some symptoms Chills and shaking or night sweats Fatigue and a general ill feeling Fever above 101 degrees  Back or groin pain Flush, warm or reddish of the skin May have a feeling of nausea or vomiting Severe abdominal pain
Treatments for UTI Antibiotics can be taken by mouth are usually whats recommended. Bladder infections antibiotics will be taken for 3 days for women and 7-14 days for men Must make sure that all prescribed drugs are taken until completion. Different antibiotics Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxaole Amoxicillin Augmentin Doxycycline
CRF Abbreviation for chronic renal failure This is a disease is the slow loss of kidney function that will happen over time The kidneys main function in the body is to remove waste and excess water from the body.  Symptoms of CRF Feeling ill and fatigue Itching and dry skin Headaches Weight loss  Loss of appetite Felling nausea These symptoms come when the kidneys worsen over time Abnormally dark or light skin Bone pain Breath odor Easy to be bruised Bleeding in the stool Excessive thirst Menstrual period stops Swelling of hands and feet
RP Abbreviation for Retrograde pyelogram Uses a dye to figure out what is blocking the urinary tract ie: kidney stones  During test a cystoscope will be inserted into the urethra (carries urine out of the body) Reasons for RP If the tests doesnt show reason for the urinary symptoms Can not be done because of possible chronic kidney disease Person is allergic to iodine-based dyes used in intravenoud pyelogram
Results of RP When doing the retrograde pyelogram the following results can appear: Normal: the bladder, kidneys all appear normal Abnormal: when doing the test the dye wasnt flowing due to a block such as a stone or another problem in the urinary system.
ESWL Abbreviation for extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy This procedure breaks kidney stones in to small pieces which could travel to the urinary tract  This procedure involves local anesthesia Patient lie on a water cushion and a surgeon uses X-rays test to locate the stone This takes about an hour
What is expected after Procedure With this procedure you are able to go home and do not have to spend the night in hospital Take a few days for all the stones pieces to pass from your body. May have a little pain as the stones passes through
BUN Abbreviations stands for blood urea nitrogen.  Urea nitrogen is what forms when protein breaks down This is a procedure that can be done to measure the amount of urea nitrogen in blood How is test done?? Blood is drawn from the vein Usually taken from inside of the elbow or back of the hand Infants or children the test is performed using a lancet to puncture the skin to make bleed
Why is test done??? This test is done to check kidney function Normal results are 7-20mg but may vary from person to person Abnormal results mean that there are higher levels which can be because of: Congestive heart failure Excessive protein level in the gastrointestinal tract Hypovolemia Heart attack Kidney failure Urinary tract obstruction
